The Guild holds happy hours the first Wednesday of every month. Check Slack for details on the next one!
Stewards are Guild members who help educate peers on the contract, escalate workplace issues, mobilize, assist with signing up new hires and introduce new hires at our occasional meet-and-greet events.
Contact Jeff Hargarten for more details.
Guild members started the Women’s Network in 2017 before expanding it company-wide to all departments. Modeled after an employee group at the New York Times, the Women’s Network aims to break down silos between departments and make the Star Tribune a more connected, welcoming place. We organize Q&As with community leaders, workshops on important topics and social events – from rock climbing and hiking to snowshoeing and pickleball. All events are open to all employees (men, too!).
Message Kelly to join the e-mail list or follow #stwomensnetwork on Slack for updates.
Contact Dee DePass and Cathy Roberts to join the Cheer Committee, which plans social events, including our annual holiday party in December and annual September picnic at Minnehaha Park, social events the company once paid for and planned. The committee also held a Backyard Bash in early summer in 2022 and 2023, and sends cards and flowers to Guild members after major life events throughout the year.
The Cheer Committee is funded by donations, not Guild dues.
The joint Guild-management Diversity Committee meets several times a year to discuss diversity, equity and inclusion issues in the newsroom. The Guild reps are Kavita Kumar, Zoë Jackson, L.A. Johnson and Neal Justin. They’re looking for help restarting the Diversity Dialogues workshop, educational events on how to cover underrepresented communities. Help brainstorm ideas and reach out to possible speakers. Previous topics have included covering Islam, Native American issues, transgender people, the Latino community and the military.
Contact Kavita Kumar to help.
Contact Amy Kuebelbeck to learn about the task force, which began in 2019 to address staffing shortages and issues affecting nightsiders.
The Star Tribune is one of 28 units in the Minnesota Guild, which is looking to restart its Human Rights Committee. If you’d like to join the committee, contact Allana Olson.
The Star Tribune Guild is led by two co-chairs, three vice chairs and a chief steward in all-volunteer two-year terms. The next election will take place in November 2025.
What do we do?
While negotiating a contract every three years is the largest thing we do, we work all year to help Guild members on issues related to their pay, benefits or working conditions and push the company to make improvements outside of negotiations, such as adding COVID paid time off or offering crisis counseling.
The two co-chairs meet with management, help Guild members with contract or benefits questions, attend Local meetings, and organize unit meetings and surveys.
Vice chairs are liaisons to the Diversity Committee, Cheer Committee and Nightside Task Force and help with unit communication and surveys.
The chief steward signs up new members, organizes steward meetings and trainings and plans the new member welcome events.
